Machine for masks production

It has been one year since COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic and caused disruptions in supply chains while the unprecedented demand for personal protective equipment required a rapid response and production at short notice. In most European countries, government-imposed orders to wear face masks very quickly became a proven and simple way to prevent the virus spread and protect citizens.

To prepare Europe for managing pandemics, the CO-VERSATILE production line ‘Machine for FFP2 protective masks production’ is focusing on developing a high-capacity solution based on Demcon’s modular face masks machine. A group of partners, including Fraunhofer IML, HSSMI, SZTAKI and University of Westminster, will be working with Demcon to build a solution for local European masks production. Key benefits of this production line include:

  • Full automation of masks machine production processes - material infeed, nose clip and contour welding, print and strap application, folding, fold welding, contour cut and outfeed.
  • Safety of the machine operation achieved with video surveillance of production steps and the product quality.
  • Zero-defect production.
  • DEMCON will leverage its expertise and collaborate with consortium partners to:

  • Set up a supply chain model to simulate several pandemic-like situations based on real-world experiences and run this model in the cloud as a cloudified service;
  • Develop manufacturing models based on real-life examples, validate several optimisation scenarios and deploy the models;
  • Develop a manual of operation and maintenance in 3D PDF format to be supplied alongside the machine to support employees of future adopters of this equipment.
